RUBBER
RCYCLING
The amount of tire waste has been increasing year after year. The natural decomposition process of these tires is very slow because they are made of rubber. If tires are disposed of unsafely, they can cause environmental pollution. Furthermore, dengue fever virus can grow in the water that is accumulated inside old tires. The waste tire recycling regulation has been enforced by EPA ( Environmental Protection Agency).

How to convert the recycled waste tires into recycled resources? According to the research conducted by the Waste Tire Council and the Energy Department of Industrial Study Center, the best way to regenerate resources from tires is cracking them at a low temperature.

The principle of low temperature cracking is that the materials become brittle at low temperatures. The brittle temperature is different for different materials. The rubber, steel wires, and nylon fibers contained in tires can be separated by cracking at the temperature of 60 _C below zero. The good news is that the low temperature produced by the gasification of liquid natural gas, which will be imported by Chong Oil Company, can be used as a energy source to perform low temperature cracking of tires in the next ten years.

When the rubber produced in tire cracking is mixed with bitumen and used to surface roads, the life time of roads can be increased about three times and the traffic noise can be decreased about 30%. According to researchers, the life time of bitumen roads is about 5 to 7 years. However, the life time can be increased to 15 to 20 years when the mixture of 30% of the rubber power and 30% of bitumen is used to surface the roads, which also can resist higher temperature without melting. That is very helpful in hot weather regions.

The traffic noise on a road surrounding a lake was a big problem in Brussels, Belgium. It has been changed since the mixture was used to surface the road. The noise was reduce about 30% because the new surface can absorb the traffic noise better. If we can use the mixture to surface the roads in Taiwan, not only with the environmental pollution resulting from improper treatment of tires can be eliminated, but also the quality of the roads can be increased, having a long life and a more advanced noiseless road.
